Chancenkarte — Germany's Opportunity Card for Kenyans

What is the Chancenkarte?

The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) is Germany's newest immigration pathway, introduced in June 2024 as part of the Skilled Workers Immigration Act reform. It is a points-based system that gives qualified professionals from non-EU countries a 1-year residence permit to search for work in Germany.

Think of it as Germany saying: "We know you are qualified. Come here, find a job, and stay." Unlike other visa types, you do not need a job offer before arriving.

How does the Chancenkarte points system work?

You need a minimum of 6 points to qualify. Points are awarded as follows:

CriterionPoints
Recognised university degree4
Professional experience (5+ years in your field)3
German language B2 or higher2
German language B11
English language B2 or higher1
Age under 352
Previous stay in Germany (6+ months)1
Spouse/partner with Chancenkarte or German residence1

Example: Kenyan IT professional

A 28-year-old Kenyan with a BSc in Computer Science (4 points), German B1 (1 point), and under 35 (2 points) would have 7 points — enough to qualify.

Example: Kenyan nurse

A 32-year-old nurse with a recognised diploma (may count as 4 if degree-equivalent), 6 years experience (3 points) = 7 points.

What are the requirements for the Chancenkarte?

Beyond the points threshold, you also need:

  1. Recognised qualification — Your degree or diploma must be recognised in Germany (check the anabin database)
  2. Financial proof — Approximately EUR 11,904 in a blocked account or equivalent financial security
  3. Health insurance — Valid for the duration of your stay
  4. Valid passport — With at least 12 months remaining

Do Kenyans qualify for the Chancenkarte?

The Chancenkarte is best suited for:

  • University graduates with degrees in demand fields (IT, engineering, healthcare)
  • Experienced professionals with 5+ years in their field
  • People with some German — Even B1 helps your points total
  • Younger applicants — The under-35 age bonus is significant

It is less suitable for:

  • KCSE holders without university education (the points threshold is hard to reach)
  • People with no professional experience
  • Those who need immediate income (you must support yourself for up to 1 year while searching)

How do I apply for the Chancenkarte?

  1. Check your points — Use the table above. You need at least 6.
  2. Get qualification recognised — Start the Anerkennung process early.
  3. Prepare financial proof — Open a blocked account with EUR 11,904.
  4. Apply for visa — Through TLScontact Nairobi with the German Embassy.
  5. Arrive in Germany — You have 1 year to find qualified employment.
  6. Switch visa — Once employed, convert to a Fachkraft visa for long-term stay.

Is the Chancenkarte right for you?

Choose Chancenkarte if:

  • You have a degree and professional experience
  • You can afford the blocked account
  • You want flexibility to explore different employers
  • You are confident you can find work within 1 year

Choose Ausbildung instead if:

  • You are a recent KCSE graduate
  • You cannot afford the blocked account
  • You want to earn while learning
  • You are starting a new career

Choose Fachkraft visa instead if:

  • You already have a job offer from a German company
  • Your qualification is already recognised
  • You want certainty and stability from day one
