Chancenkarte — Germany's Opportunity Card for Kenyans
What is the Chancenkarte?
The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) is Germany's newest immigration pathway, introduced in June 2024 as part of the Skilled Workers Immigration Act reform. It is a points-based system that gives qualified professionals from non-EU countries a 1-year residence permit to search for work in Germany.
Think of it as Germany saying: "We know you are qualified. Come here, find a job, and stay." Unlike other visa types, you do not need a job offer before arriving.
How does the Chancenkarte points system work?
You need a minimum of 6 points to qualify. Points are awarded as follows:
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Recognised university degree | 4 |
| Professional experience (5+ years in your field) | 3 |
| German language B2 or higher | 2 |
| German language B1 | 1 |
| English language B2 or higher | 1 |
| Age under 35 | 2 |
| Previous stay in Germany (6+ months) | 1 |
| Spouse/partner with Chancenkarte or German residence | 1 |
Example: Kenyan IT professional
A 28-year-old Kenyan with a BSc in Computer Science (4 points), German B1 (1 point), and under 35 (2 points) would have 7 points — enough to qualify.
Example: Kenyan nurse
A 32-year-old nurse with a recognised diploma (may count as 4 if degree-equivalent), 6 years experience (3 points) = 7 points.
What are the requirements for the Chancenkarte?
Beyond the points threshold, you also need:
- Recognised qualification — Your degree or diploma must be recognised in Germany (check the anabin database)
- Financial proof — Approximately EUR 11,904 in a blocked account or equivalent financial security
- Health insurance — Valid for the duration of your stay
- Valid passport — With at least 12 months remaining
Do Kenyans qualify for the Chancenkarte?
The Chancenkarte is best suited for:
- University graduates with degrees in demand fields (IT, engineering, healthcare)
- Experienced professionals with 5+ years in their field
- People with some German — Even B1 helps your points total
- Younger applicants — The under-35 age bonus is significant
It is less suitable for:
- KCSE holders without university education (the points threshold is hard to reach)
- People with no professional experience
- Those who need immediate income (you must support yourself for up to 1 year while searching)
How does the Chancenkarte differ from other visa pathways?
| Feature | Chancenkarte | Ausbildung Visa | Fachkraft Visa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Job offer needed | No | Training contract needed | Yes |
| Duration | 1 year | 3 years | 4 years |
| Income while searching | Side jobs (20 hrs/week) | Full training salary | Full salary |
| Financial requirement | EUR 11,904 | None | None |
| Path to permanent residency | Find job first, then switch visa | After Ausbildung completion | After 4 years |
| Best for | Experienced graduates | School leavers | Working professionals |
